Born and raised in New Orleans, Tracie Morris Schaefer has spent most of her life photographing Louisiana and its people. Since thumbing through National Geographic Magazines before she could read, to purchasing her first camera at the age of 13, the love of photography has remained a constant part of her life.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts at Louisiana State University in 1993, Schaefer began working in area darkrooms. Schaefer acquired an assistantship with nationally recognized, local based photographer DonnYoung, which blossomed into a staff photographer position as well as a lasting artistic friendship. During this period, Schaefer mastered the art of darkroom printing, emerged as a local photographer and traveled throughout the U.S and internationally, to meet clients needs.
The commitment to journalism coincided with a personal commitment of marriage to long time sweetheart in 2001 while joining the ranks as Staff Photographer for Slidell Sentry-News. Schaefer received numerous Louisiana Press Awards for Best Front Page, Best Feature, Best News while increasing layout and design skills with conceptualizing weekly artistic essays.
